Hello all

With the issue of the ability to recover ourselves and others being currently in the spotlight I thought it would be a good time to share this.

After reading some posts on various international forums about the suitability (or not Shocked) of the rear eye for offroad recovery I thought I might investigate further....

Pajero/Shogun recover point welded to chassis - nice and strong...unless ur chassis is rotten it aint coming off.

I read somewhere that the rear eye is only rated at 1.5T so I took it off to assess. The plate is 5mm thick....its only welded on one side...suitable for snatch recovery Huh? Shocked

I brought this a few weeks ago so its definately time to fit..rated at 5T (metric 5000kg).

The original bolts arent long enough (30mm -about 3mm short of 'full nut') so I am sourcing some more. The bolts are a bit of any odd size thread so a little difficult to find. They are M12 EXTRA FINE pitch and for this hook need to be 45mm long. so... M12 X 1.25P X 45L. I picked 8.8 tensile rating as these will be more than adequate.

By 'more than adequate' i mean 800N/mm2 each... over 9000kg per 12mm bolt...x4....roughly 36T Grin

I have a 5T(nominal) 10m strop,I will be getting a longer and shorter in due time, and Lee is providing me with some shackles next time I'm out Wink Wink.....arent you Lee  laugh

I will also be investing in a Kinetic rope soon and will feel much happier I am not going to be sending my towing eye thru someones windscreen.

Rear recovery point sorted-Safer,stronger and less faffing. All good.

looks good mate

i have a dixon bate one from the military on all of mine

they are great

but i use the towbar for any snatch towing to be honest

as its easier to just drop the rope over the ball

than fiddle with the pin

may i suggest when you go to get your new bolts you get them even longer again and put nuts onto the backs aswell

that way you wont pull the threads out and you can tack weld the nuts to the bolts on the back to save some undesirable unbolting your new product    Wink Wink

i have these slim line shogun towbars in stock secondhand £30

Hi

Dixon Bate...nice but even an old seized ones with bits missing going for silly money on Fleabay.I know u had your for the Sankey though.

How did u attach the BBQ if its too much trouble to pull the pin out....I bet u got Einstein to do it ...didnt you ! laugh laugh laugh

Was thinking with 45mm long bolt that I can get another nut on but tricky to reach behind the back of the chassis bracket.Worth a try for the sake of a few pence for the extra nuts.

With regard to welding it on ....will it pass a MOT with this hook on ?...it does stick out further than the bumper.

If I didnt weld it on I thought I could replace one bolt with a flat seat m12 x 1.25p locking wheel bolt instead for security maybe ?  or only put it on for laning days... Its pretty quiet where i live and my 3 dogs bark when a fly goes past the house even in pitch darkness... Grin

Those tow bars are a nice tidy fit, especially on such a nice Shoggie  Roll Eyes ,hope u didnt get it wet or dirty to take that picture  laugh

Had thought about a trailer recently but fairly low on my 'need' list. Are those tow balls strong enough for recovery cos read stories about castings failing....is it forged ones are ok and cast not ok Huh??

As the Australians say 'If you wanna go to the dessert take a Landy if ya want come back now thats a different matter.....'

Landys dont have recovery point cos theres nothing safe enough to fix em too

my dear shaun

the mitsubishi have several different height recovery points at the rear for recovering  landrovers    Shocked Shocked

the higher one is for if the landrover has got air in its tyres

the lower one is for if it hasnt    laugh laugh

spoonboy

any tow ball which has signs of damage should be thrown away

most horror stories are from idiots who buy a used tow ball with signs of damage from a car boot sale ect

i sell the tow bars but take off the ball when i sell it

they are only £6 each

they are designed to tow a huge amount

but once damaged they can hide a hairline crack

thats why any car involved in a rear end shunt with a towbar fitted the insurance company always replace the ball even if its not got any signs of damage

im not to sure what the pajero / shogun hooks are rated at

but is it the hook thats rated or the tube that it bolts to

dont forget these were never designed for snatch towing vehicles which are stuck in mud up to the chassis

personally i would only use it for towing a rolling car or trailer

as ive seen the tubes bent before where people have tried to pull big objects  ?

the slim line towbars are great as if you were to reverse into a rock

you will only bent the bar or scratch the paint

if you do that without one you could pierce the fuel tank

with the dixon bate one that i have fitted to my green shogun they swivel as well as open

with lack of use the pins can get tight if not regulary greased up

as i dont have the sankey anymore i dont bother to grease it

yes they pass the M.O.T ok with them on

which is a good job as all mine are welded on the backs   laugh laugh

i do have 4 x brand new genuine nato dixon bate tow hitchs in stock if anyone wants one  £100 each

which is half price

i also have a used larger one which is suited for a 7.5 ton truck   £40

all in stock at the finest 4x4 emporium
